I chose my topic, the Tet Offensive because it is the turning point in the Vietnam War. I narrowed the dense topic down to this years's related topic of turning points. The Vietnam War is a war that interested me because it is the first war that the United States had lost. I wanted to know why the U.S. lost this war and could it happen again in the present day. As I researched the war, the Tet Offensive naturally became the focus and attention that I thought to be the turning point of this unfortunate war.
I conducted my research on the Tet Offensive by checking out books from my local library and logging onto the internet. The majority of research was conducted over a couple of months focusing on the Vietnam War. The search engine Google helped a lot to organize the topics. Each search yielded a battle that occurred during the war. The library books also gave me a better understanding in simple text as to the causes and effects of the war. The images and pictures were all chosen through Google images and copied onto this website. Overall the two ways in which I conducted my research was by way of textbooks and the internet.
I chose to create a website to be the category for this History Day project. The other ideas didn’t catch my attention as the website did. The website seemed to be the most fun and creative way to execute this project. I have never created my own website, it was challenging, but a great format to begin with.
My website on the Tet Offensive definitely relates to the NHD theme because it is an important turning point of the Vietnam War. The Tet Offensive brought about strong thinking in part to the North Vietnam Military and its General Giap reorganizing itself after a huge loss in this battle. The North reassesses their tactics and strategies that helped them to win the war through the final siege of Saigon. The loss of the Tet Offensive for the North ultimately became their win for the final stages of the Vietnam War.
